The Acting Chief Executive of Stonewall has commented on the controversial appointment of Nicky Morgan as the new Minister for Women by highlighting that lesbians and bisexual women continue to face discrimination.
Ms Morgan, the Conservative MP for Loughborough, voted against the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act at second and third reading last year. She said: “There have been plenty of little changes down the years but what’s never been changed is that the fact that marriage is between a man and a woman.”
In a government reshuffle on Wednesday, sparked by the resignation of Maria Miller, Ms Morgan was appointed Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Minister for Women.
Labour and human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell have criticised Ms Morgan’s appointment.
But unlike Ms Morgan, Mr Javid, MP for Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, voted in favour of the same-sex marriage act for England and Wales.
Stonewall Acting Chief Executive Ruth Hunt told PinkNews.co.uk: “We look forward to working closely with both Sajid and Nicky. There’s still a lot to do to secure full equality for lesbian, gay and bisexual people – not least ensuring civil partnership conversion is introduced as soon as possible.
“We also know that lesbians and bisexual women continue to face additional and unique discrimination and prejudice. We’ll judge them both on their actions whilst in office to help address these issues.”
